A Force For True Change
We are a group of over 100 women championing a healthy Lake Simcoe and its Watershed.
For the past 30 years, beautiful Lake Simcoe has been abused and neglected. Cold water fish are struggling to breed. Beaches are closing. Weeds and invasive species are rampant.
Until the Ladies of the Lake arrived on the scene, most people looked the other way or felt the situation hopeless. With wit and energy, we set out to change the dynamic - and in just seven years have helped make saving Lake Simcoe a priority.
Our Story
The Ladies of the Lake got its start when co-founders Annabel Slaight and Jane Meredith were with a group of people paddling up the Maskinonge River. When they became stuck in the weeds and could go no further, they decided to take action.
Annabel and Jane had seen the 2003 film Calendar Girls. After the river trip, the two friends began to joke about producing a similar calendar to raise money to help the lake – and the Naked Truth 2006 and 2009 calendars were born. Over $400,000 was raised in trust for the Ladies to use for innovative projects to revitalize Lake Simcoe and its watershed.
To get maximum bang for the buck Ladies of the Lake’s focus has been public awareness and leading projects that help shifts in thinking and action. All initiatives are backed up by research. Another key component of Ladies of the lake projects is collaboration with others to maximize financial commitment and impact. And by being a bridge rather lobby group we are making public awareness a driver for government action.
